Preventing Falls This Winter

sidewalk-iceFalls are a leading cause of emergency room visits in Vermont, especially during the winter months when the roads and sidewalks are wet, cold and slippery.

And for seniors, falls are a serious concern. A fall can result in severe injuries like a hip fracture or head injury. Because of these risks, seniors can develop a fear of falling. They may limit their activities which can result in reduced mobility and further health issues.

Daily exercise, reducing hazards around the house, adding grab bars near the tub, and having your doctor review your medications are great precautions for helping to lower the risk of a fall at any time of year.

During these winter months, try some of these extra safety measures:

  • Make sure all walkways and driveways are properly cleared of snow and ice and use sand and salt on icy surfaces.
  • Wear boots with good traction and try to avoid going out alone.
  • Make sure there is adequate lighting on outdoor paths.
  • Install handrails on stairways.
  • Stock up on extra supplies like medication and food so trips outside are not necessary if the weather is bad.
  • Tread carefully, as ice can easily hide under a thin layer of snow.

An injury that occurs when you are alone can be potentially dangerous. It is important to check in with people around you and ask for help when you need it.
