2017 Fun Run & Jiggety Jog
The weather on Saturday was a runner’s dream – not to hot, not too cold, not sunny, but not raining. Runners, walkers, joggers and bikers gathered together at the Malletts Bay School in Colchester, for this year’s 5K Fun Run & Jiggety Jog, a benefit for the McClure Miller VNA Respite House. Thanks to the fundraising efforts, as well as the underwriting of corporate sponsors, more than $40,000 was raised to benefit Vermont’s only hospice home.
Alice Christian of Colchester was the top individual fundraiser this year, with a grand total of $2,295. Our top team fundraiser this year was Team Irwin, who raised an impressive total of $6,240. We also want to recognize Team Backwoods Wanderers, who was the top first-time team fundraiser with a total of $2,671.
If you didn’t get a chance before the run, there is still time to donate to a team or individual. Please visit our First Giving page by clicking here.
We are also proud of our timed runners this year. Jamie Shearer of Essex was our top overall runner for the second year in a row, finishing with a time of 19:46. Sara Roberts of Burlington was the first female runner to cross the finish line with a time of 21:21. All of our runners who participated in the 5K race received an official time and top finishers for each age category were awarded medals.
“Each May we come together to honor the residents, caregivers and families who have called Respite House home. This year is especially exciting since we’ve moved to our expanded, state-of-the-art Respite House here in Colchester, allowing us to care for more of our friends and neighbors than ever before. This event is such a beautiful way to celebrate the lives of lost loved ones. We are so thankful to our community for their incredible support of our hospice program,” said VNA Respite House Administrator Sharon Keegan.
Every dollar raised at the Fun Run and Jiggety Jog allows VNA Respite House to provide compassionate hospice care to those who are unable to pay the full fee for room and board. Through the generosity of our community, no one facing a terminal illness is ever turned away due to lack of ability to pay. For 26 years, VNA Respite House has been a unique model in health care. It is the first and only Medicare-certified inpatient hospice residence in Vermont. Approximately 40% of the Respite House operating budget comes from community support, including the money raised at this event.
We would like to thank all of our volunteers, including those from New York Life, who worked to make this event a success. We also appreciate the support of Malletts Bay School, Colchester Parks and Recreation, Colchester Rescue Squad and Colchester Police department who helped ensure the event ran smoothly.
Of course, this event could not have been a success without the support of our sponsors: The University of Vermont Medical Center, REM Development, Lamoureux & Dickinson, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Northern New England, Hannaford, New England Air Systems, Downs Rachlin Martin, PLLC, SecurShred, Snyder Homes, Sterling Construction, Willie Racine’s Jeep, NFP Property and Casualty Services, Costco, WCAX, Top Hat Entertainment, Vermont Lake Monsters, Funny Business Entertainment, LLC, and Mace Engravers.
